5 Ways to Monitor and Improve Windows 7 Performance

View Comments comments

Windows 7 has lots of improvements on performance side when compared to Vista. One of the main reasons why Vista was a failure was due to the fact that performance of Vista was not up to the mark. Even though Windows 7 is optimized and shows great performance there would still be performance issues due to various reasons like drivers not updated, some applications consuming more memory etc. You can monitor the performance of Windows 7 and also increase the performance using the in-build tools in Windows 7.

windows 7

1. View Performance in event Viewer: You can monitor the performance using the logs in the event viewer. Event viewer is a tool for monitoring the health of systems and troubleshooting issues when they arise. (Control Panel-> All Control Panel Items->Performance Information and Tools-> Advanced Tools- > View Performance details in event log)

2. Performance Monitor: You can use Windows Performance Monitor to examine how programs you run affect your computer’s performance, both in real time and by collecting log data for later analysis. (Control Panel-> All Control Panel Items->Performance Information and Tools-> Advanced Tools- > View Performance Monitor)

3. Resource Monitor: Windows Resource Monitor is a system tool that allows you to view information about the use of hardware (CPU, memory, disk, and network) and software (file handles and modules) resources in real time. You can use Resource Monitor to start, stop, suspend, and resume processes and services. (Control Panel-> All Control Panel Items->Performance Information and Tools-> Advanced Tools- > View Resource Monitor)

4. Generate a System Health report: System health report is generated based on the performance of CPU, Network, Disk drives, Software, Operating System, hardware configuration, memory etc. This report will give an in depth idea of the performance issues in your PC.

5. Adjust appearance and performance of Windows: There are many features which are enabled or disabled by default in your OS. In case you are not using these cosmetic features, you can turn off to get better performance. You can adjust the system for best appearance or best performance.

Interesting Code Highlighters for blogs and websites

Code highlighters are very useful tools to present code snippets on your blog or website with a professional look and improve the readability of code you provide for your readers. In this post I want to reply to some requests I received in the past weeks about this topic and suggest you my five favourites code highlithers.

1. SyntaxHighlighter
SyntaxHighlighter is a popular code highlighter to help a developer/coder to post code snippets online with ease and have it look pretty. It's 100% Java Script based and it doesn't care what you have on your server. This is the final result:

2. Quick Highlighter
Quick Highlighter is an useful online tool to convert a plain text that contains some code (HTML, PHP, JavaScript) to formatted-highlighted code ready to copy and past on your blog or website. This is the result:

3. FV Code Highlighter
Frank Verhoeven released this great code higlither that transforms plain text in higlighted code in the same style of the Dreamweaver higligther. The result is very nice and professional:

4. Source Code Highlighter
This online tool allows you to highlight your C#, VB, ASPX, HTML, XML, JavaScript code for publishing on a web site or in a blog.It doesn't use CSS styles in output, but pure HTML FONT (size, color and font attributes) tag.

5. Highlight.js
Highlight.js highlights syntax in code examples on blogs, forums and in fact on any web pages. It's very easy to use because it works automatically: finds blocks of code, detects a language, highlights it.

5 Reasons Why Many Kids Don’t Use Twitter

Whenever I asked my fellow peers about they feel about Twitter, some simply shrugged their shoulders or even said there is nothing special as compared to social networking giant Facebook. In my own opinion, Twitter is fun and unique. It has helped me learn several valuable skills indirectly. What’s great about Twitter is that it enabled me to keep updated to the latest news be it on the world wide web or the physical world. Unfortunnately, a large majority of my friends and probably even kids from around the world dislike Twitter and thinks it’s a fad. Here are 5 reasons why.

1. Facebook = Twitter, But Much Better

Relating to Math, Twitter is a sub-set of Facebook. In layman terms, it means whatever Twitter has, Facebook already has it. Although these two platforms have different cores, but from an ordinary child’s perspective, he or she may think that both Twitter and Facebook are similar, just that Facebook offers more interesting and social features. For example, kids need not to head to Twitter to share their thoughts and daily lives (What are you doing?) on the micro-blogging service as they can easily do so on their Facebook Wall itself.

Rather than merely telling others what you are doing, Facebook enables these young kids to interact with their friends in real-time using its built-in IM, play or even challenge their friends in online games such as Pet Society, Mafia Wars and Restaurant City all in one page. Of course, it’s kind of weird to have two accounts posting the same updates. As a result, this is one of the main reason why Twitter can’t attract kids to join the platform.

2. Parents Are Reluctant to Fork Out Money to Pay for Expensive & Unnecessary Phone Bills

Because of the global recession, parents are reluctant to dig out extra money from their pockets to pay for expensive and unnecessary phone bills. Nowadays, most Twitter users tend to send tweets via their mobile phones. Of course, it would be insane to fork out precious money to post updates to complete strangers you don’t about. Teenagers would rather SMS their friends whom they knew.

3. Kids Have One Focus In Mind – Friends and Not Political News

There’s no doubt that today’s generation of teenagers are tech-savvy. It’s a common sight to see kids spending a huge portion of their time on Facebook, blogging and Instant Messengers. These share a common denominator – friends. Using these social networking platforms, we students are able to interact and connect with our friends online after school. For example, we can share our views, thoughts and opinions of a particular issue on MSN’s personal message, Facebook Wall, personal blogs and many more.

Although it’s possible to make the micro-blogging “private”, but unfortunately, the culture of Twitter is all about participation in a large public square. Twitter dominates the news and some Internet marketers and bloggers use it as a marketing tool instead of a micro-blogging service. Do you think kids really care much about what’s happening in the recent Iran presidential election and the latest news in both the physical and technological worlds? Honestly speaking, they don’t really bother much about all these stuff. What they are interested in are games and friends. Besides that, Twitter doesn’t offers a threaded conversation feature unlike Facebook. Therefore, kids use Facebook and MySpace rather than Twitter.

4. My Friends Don’t Use It, So I Don’t Use It Too

Since we spend a large portion of our time in school, it’s quite natural to make friends who help us during our difficult times. As a result, they somehow influence our lifestyles and habits. For example, a student is ‘addicted’ to Facebook. He loves it so much and invites his friends to join his network. Out of curiosity, they will not hestitate much and sign up for an account on the social networking platform. This ‘chain invite’ will continue if an increasing number of teenagers start persuading their friends or peers to check out the great and exciting features on Facebook.

Usually, kids will follow the current trend. If everyone in the class owns a Facebook account except you, won’t you feel awkward of being an outcast. I’m pretty sure you’ll follow the crowd sooner or later. This principle applies to the same as Twitter. If my friends don’t use it, so why should bother creating a profile whereby none of my followers are my friends whom I knew well.

5. Tweets Become “Pointless” As No One Views Their Profiles

Teenagers tend to have less than 50 followers on average. Some of them are genuine friends whereas the rest are either strangers or even bots/spammers. Different from the majority of adults, most of their updates encircle around the question – “What are you doing?”. It’s rather boring when you see a timeline filled with these tweets. Who would want to know what “gold” you’ve just dug out from your nose or which Michael Jackson songs are you listening to. In the beginning, loyal friends will reply once in a while but this frequency will reduce significantly as time goes by. Gradually, when no one views their profiles or replies to their posts, their tweets become “pointless” and as a result, they quit the service.

Easy Way to Hide or Remove New Tab Button in Firefox 3.5

Firefox 3.5 came with a handful of new options, customizations, bug fixes and security enhancements. One of the least popular features in Firefox 3.5 is it’s “new tab button” (a button with + sign). This new tab button appears next to the last opened tab but it’s very annoying to many people since they are already comfortable with older tab navigation features. They are habituated with opening a new tab by right clicking on the empty tab area and selecting a new tab, double clicking on the empty tab area to open a new tab or pressing CTRL+T to open new tabs. If you are not so friendly with this new tab button, here is a easy way to hide or remove it from firefox 3.5 completely.

Clean An Infected Computer with Bootable Antivirus CD

As we all know that Virus Removal and Scan is a complex process. The first thing which today’s viruses and malware do is to make their detection difficult by disabling security software and system files. They get loaded as soon as you boot up your system and take control of the entire system.

In such a situation, detection of them through the traditional security software already installed in your system is very difficult, because their potency is already crippled by the presence of malware.

Your only choice in this case can be to use a bootable virus scan and rescue CD, which can initialize your system through an external device and can do a complete scan of your system. This way, the virus infections present in your system cannot take control of your system and can be detected and cleaned easily.
